III-1 – Ionics meets bioscience

Electrolyte and Electrochemical based systems for printable and/or easily manufactured (Bio)electronics are attracting increasing interest. The need for on-chip integrable and inexpensive detecting systems, as well as for bio-integrated actuators and other bio-mimetic electronic devices, is paving the way for a number of novel, solution processable materials and device architectures. But electrolytes also interact with other types of biological systems such as enzymes.

Chemical, ionic, and optoelectronic attributes of organic materials contribute synergistically to define the performance level of bioelectronic devices as well as reactions systems. Examples of devices include the integration of devices into living organisms or extremely performing sensors. However, a better understanding of the organic/living tissue interface, which will lead to the design of better biosensor concepts, remains a challenge.Application oriented studies are urging the need of a deeper understanding of all the fundamental aspects related to bioelectronics device operation, including phenomena in aqueous systems or even in biological fluids. In addition, there are interesting studies on bioscience in non-aqueous phases. For example, ionic liquids are being used for electrochemistry of proteins and enzymes.

Bioelectronics is a highly interdisciplinary research and development which is inspired by biological materials and biological architectures for information processing systems and new devices in life science.

This symposium will be focused on the most recent progress in Bioelectronics for chemical, biological, and physical sensors and actuators. Devices such as organic electrolyte and electrochemical transistors, bioelectronic devices, including neural interfaces, diagnostics, drug delivery devices, and tissue engineering concepts using electrochemical activation/control of cells will be discussed. Studies also of the more fundamental device and systems, transport/sensing/gating operational aspects in aqueous and non-aqueous phases will also be a core part of the symposium.

In this Symposium are also welcome those contributions which cover the topics beyond the above-described areas. This is done to provide the audience with a comprehensive description of Solid State Ionics.
