Madsen employs multi-modal NMR to investigate fundamental behaviors of soft materials such as ionic liquids and gels, ionic polymer membranes, liquid crystals, and polymeric agents for drug delivery and MRI diagnostics. Madsen obtained his PhD at Caltech in 2002 (Weitekamp) postdoc’ed at UNC Chapel Hill (Samulski) and Victoria U., NZ (Callaghan), and joined the faculty at Virginia Tech in 2006.
