Born in 1972, Davide Barreca got his MsC degree in Chemistry (110/110 cum laude) in 1996 and his PhD at Padova University in 2000. After a Post-Doctoral research grant, D.B. was appointed CNR Researcher in 2001. From 2002 to 2019, he has been Senior Researcher, and since 2020 he is a CNR Research Director. From 1999 to 2022, D.B. has been contract professor for PhD/Material School courses and for various Chemistry and PhD courses in Padova University, and responsible of the integrated course General, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry for the Environmental Science and Technology Bachelor Degree – Padova University from 2014 to 2022. He is/has been member of the Supervision Board for PhD schools in Information Engineering – Brescia University and Material Science and Engineering – Padova University. Since 2022, he is member of the ICMATE-CNR supporting group for the technological transfer of research results.
The research group to which D.B. belongs has matured an internationally recognized know-how in the design and vapor phase fabrication of functional materials, and has progressively extended the activities to a broad range of multi-functional metal-oxide nanosystems, from thin films to ordered nano-arrays with controlled morphologies, for specific advanced applications in sensing, photocatalysis and energetics. The research activity of D. Barreca is so far documented by more than 340 papers (H-index = 58), various patents and >30 invited talks/seminars at national/international conferences, foreign universities and other scientific events.
For the significant results achieved during his career, he received various awards, such as the Vincenzo Caglioti–Accademia dei Lincei Prize (2008), the Prize for Strategic Relevance/Excellence Results – CNR Researchers (2009), the SAPIO Junior Prize for Italian research (2010) and the Top 1% reviewer award in Cross-Fields – Publons - Global Peer Review Awards 2019 – Materials Science. He has been included among the Top Italian Scientists in Chemistry (TIS) and the Top 2% Scientists list - World Ranking Scientists – Stanford University - Italia Career 2019 (2019-21), and in the Best Scientists ranking for Materials Science (AD Scientific Index and Research.com, 2022-23).
He has been member of the E-MRS Board of Delegates (2016-2019). He was/is local responsible of both national (CNR, INSTM consortium) and EU (FP7-ITN, NMP) projects, and of different industrial contractships. He is/was tutor of various BSc/MSc/PhD theses, and responsible for PhD/Post-Doc formation. He is member of the International EUROCVD Board, associate editor of Surface Science Spectra and member of the Editorial Board of Materials. He has been European Editor of Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2013-2021) and of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology Letters (2009-2021).
D.B. was member of Scientific/Organizing Congress Committees of various national and international conferences, such as EUROCVD17 (Austria, 2009), ICACC (USA, 2013), CIMTEC (Italy, 2014), ISMANAM (Rome, 2018), 8th UFGNSM (Tehran, Iran, 2021), 3NANO-2022 Conference (Rome, 2022) and E-MRS symposia (2013, 2016, 1017, 2019 and 2021). He has been panel member and evaluator and for the Chemical Sciences Panel - Institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences and for the National Agency for the Evaluation of the Research Quality (ANVUR), and referee for national/international research projects, book proposals and more than 200 international journals.

Born in 1977, Alberto Gasparotto graduated in Chemistry from the Padua University in 2002 with full marks (110/110) and obtained his PhD Degree in 2006. After a research contract financed by the National Interuniversity Consortium on Materials Science and Technology (INSTM) on hybrid and inorganic nanosystems for the development and innovation of fuel cells, in 2007 he has been appointed Assistant Professor at Department of Chemical Sciences (DiSC), UNIPD. Since 2016, he is Associate Professor of Inorganic Chemistry - SSD 03/B1. In the same year, he got the Habilitation as Full Professor - SSD 03/B1 and SSD 03/B2.
The scientific activity of Prof. Gasparotto, developed in the framework of national and international projects, and documented by over 230 papers (H-index = 51), 1 book chapter, 1 patent (licensed to Strem Chemicals®) and over 270 conference communications, is mainly devoted to the fabrication of inorganic/hybrid materials by unconventional synthetic routes (e.g. based on cold plasmas or on the synergic combination of CVD, Sputtering, ALD, Sol-Gel, ….), and the investigation of the resulting structure-property relationships. For his researches, A. Gasparotto received various awards, including the Prize for the Best Ph.D Thesis in Inorganic Chemistry-Italian Chemical Society (2006), the Eni Italgas Prize for Energy and Environment - Debut in Research (2007) and the Alceste Mion Prize for Pure Chemistry (2007). He has been Guest/Associate Editor for Chemical Vapor Deposition (2010) and Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Letters (2011-2014). He has been member of the Groups of evaluation experts (GEV) of Area 03 – Chemistry, in the Italian Evaluation of Research Quality 2015-2019 (VQR). He is referee of more than 70 ISI journals, Elsevier/CRC book proposals and national/international programs (PRAT, FIRB, Czech-Norwegian Research Programs, Czech Science Foundation, Czech Academy of Sciences, Austrian Science Fund, Dutch Research Council, French National Research Agency, COST Programme, National Centre of Science and Technology Evaluation of Kazakhstan, Romanian EEA Research Programme, Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, Regione Toscana,...). He has been organizer of the SAMIC (Syntheses and Methodologies in Inorganic Chemistry) conference (Brixen, BZ, Italy) from 2002 to 2008, co-organizer of an SSI conference symposium (Padova, 2017), and scientific committee member of an E-MRS Symposium (Strasbourg, 2013). He is/has been supervisor of BSc and MSc students in Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry/Materials Science, Professor of General Chemistry for various Degree Courses in Padova University (Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Materials Science, Animal Science and Technology,…..) and has hold lectures and specialized seminars for masters, PhD schools and international workshops.

Chiara Maccato got her MsC degree in Chemistry at Padova University (110/110) in 1995 and her PhD in Chemical Sciences at Padova University in 1999. After a Post-Doctoral research grant, in 2000 she became an Assistant Professor at Padova University, Department of Chemical Sciences (DiSC), where she is an Associate Professor since 2014. She is responsible of the integrated course Chemistry for the Molecular Biology BsC Degree (since 2009) and of the Inorganic Materials Chemistry course for the Industrial Chemistry MsC degree (since 2022). She is member of the Supervision Board for the Material Science and Engineering PhD school – Padova University (since 2018), member of the Chemistry Degree Committee – Padova University (since 2022) and member of the Space Committee – DiSC (since 2023).
The scientific interests of Prof. Maccato have initially involved theoretical modeling of the electronic structure of coordination compounds and of short-range interactions on solid surfaces. Since 2005 she is responsible for the morphological characterization laboratory of DiSC, where she installed and implemented a field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) instrument. Since then, she exclusively devoted to the development and detailed characterization of chemico-physical characterization of multi-functional inorganic and hybrid nanoarchitectures for sustainable energy production, environmental protection, and gas sensing. The scientific activity is documented by > 230 publications (H-index = 50), 1 patent and nearly 220 contributions to conferences/workshops, among which various invited talks/lecturers/seminars at national/international conferences and foreign universities. C. Maccato, fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), is responsible of the MFN group (http://www.chimica.unipd.it/multi-functional-material-group/) at DiSC. She is, or has been, tutor/co-tutor of > 30 Bachelor/Master/PhD degree theses in Chemistry/Materials Science and Engineering, supervisor of Post-Doc Research Fellows, as well as Professor for laboratory/theoretical courses (Chemistry, Science and Technology for Cultural Heritage, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science and Technology, Materials Science, Industrial Chemistry) in Padova University, and International Workshops organized within EU projects. C. Maccato is, or has been, Coordinator/Responsible/Member of national/international research projects (INSTM, Padova University, MIUR, CNR, FP7-ITN, NMP) and various industrial contractships, and evaluator of Research Products for the National Agency for the Evaluation of the Research Quality (ANVUR) and for the Chemical Sciences Panel - Institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. She has been included in the Best Scientists ranking for Materials Science (AD Scientific Index and Research.com, 2022-23). In 2020, she has been referent of “Circular use of natural resources (air, water, soil)” panel - Circular System Area - Cluster 6 - APRE in view of H2020 EU Framework Programme Calls.
She is one of the representatives of the University of Padua (Department of Chemical Sciences delegate) for the activities of the Arqus European University Alliance in its second implementation period (2022-2026).
She has been/is member of the Editorial Boards of Advanced Science, Engineering and Medicine (2013-20) and Nanomaterials (since 2018), and of the Advisory Board of CrystEngComm (since 2020). In 2017, she has been the co-organizer of a symposium at the 21st International Conference on Solid State Ionics in Padova. In addition, she is currently referee for > 90 ISI international journals and for various national/international projects, including POR FSE 2014-2020 - Asse III “Istruzione e Formazione”, German-Israeli Foundation, Paris Saclay Projects, and Romanian - EEA and Czech-Norwegian Research Programs. For her activities, she received the Top 1% reviewer award in Cross-Fields – Publons - Global Peer Review Awards (2019), the FFARB-ANVUR prize (Fund for the financing of fundamental research activities for Associate Professors and Researchers of Italian Universities, 2017), and the Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE) Prize “The beauty of science: the photo of your research on the cover” – November 2015 Edition. She was also appointed as Outstanding Reviewer for Nanotechnology (2020) and CrystEngComm (2019).

Gian Andrea Rizzi was born in 1962 and graduated in Chemistry in December 1986 (110/110 cum laude). He got his Ph.D in Chemical Sciences in 1991 and during the same year he became a researcher at the Department of Chemical Sciences. He has been an associate professor since 2006 in the same department. The research activity of Prof. Rizzi, who has co-authored more than 135 scientific papers (H-index = 31), has been focused on the growth, structural and chemical characterization of ordered, surface stabilized, oxide and metal nano-phases, of potential relevance as sensors, model catalysts and, more recently, electrocatalysts and photoelectrocatalysts. Prof. Rizzi has gained a remarkable and long-standing know-how in the use of photoemission spectroscopies and other standard surface science techniques. The chemical properties and the reactivity of these ultra-thin films and films are studied by IR spectroscopies, temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and Raman. The photo-electrocatalytic properties have been studied by standard electrochemical techniques and more advanced photoelectrochemical measurements like electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS). He was involved in the development of innovative 2D materials for sustainable energy conversion devices (fuel cell, batteries, supercapacitors) and catalytic processes for solar fuel generation. He recently co-supervised the research projects of 2 PhD candidates from Tsinghua University (bilateral Italy−China GRAPE-MAT and GINSENG projects of the MAECI). The current research topic of Prof. Rizzi is the preparation and characterization of materials used as photoanodes and photocathodes for water-splitting and photoelectrochemical sensors.

Born in 1996, Mattia Benedet obtained the BSc in Chemistry at the University of Padova in 2018. He got his MSc in Chemistry in 2021 (110/110 cum laude) at the University of Padova, where he is currently a PhD student in Science and Engineering of Materials and Nanostructures under the supervision of Prof. C. Maccato. His research is focused on the synthesis, characterization and electrochemical validation of multi-functional supported nanosystems for photo-activated applications, ranging from pollutant sensing and degradation to hydrogen and oxygen production. His research activity is documented up to date by 7 communications to international conferences, 12 publications on international journals and many more ongoing. He has been tutor for General Chemistry BsC courses and teaching assistant of General and Inorganic Chemistry laboratory (UNIPD, 2021- ongoing), has collaborated to the supervision of bachelor (2) and master (8) theses and has taken part in 5 research projects. He has also reviewed publications for 7 ISI international journals.

Born in 1999, Enrico Scattolin achieved his BSc in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Padua in 2021 He obtained the MSc in Industrial Chemistry in 2023 (108/110) at the University of Padua where now works like research fellows (Type A Research Grant, Prin 2022) under the supervision of Prof. G.A. Rizzi. The aim of his research is the photoelectrochemical (PEC) characterisation of photo electrodes based on TMO (Cu, Zn and Bi ferrites). The project is carried out in collaboration with the Cattolica University of Brescia.

Mattia Brugia was born in 1999 and graduated in Industrial Chemistry at Padova University in 2023 (110/110 cum laude), where he is now a research fellow (Type A Research Grant) under the supervision of Prof. A. Gasparotto. His research aims at developing nanostructured (photo)electrocatalysts for the valorization of biomass-derived alcohols (ethanol, glycerol) aimed at clean H2 production, with particular efforts to the fabrication of ecofriendly supported systems based on graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) and first-row metal oxides (MOx, e.g. MnO2, Fe2O3, ZnO, ZnFe2O4) by versatile synthetic routes.
